Heinz Heck (born January 22, 1894 in Berlin ; † March 5, 1982 in Munich ) was a biologist and zoo director in Munich.

Life

Heinz Heck was born on January 22nd, 1894 as the fourth child of the Berlin zoo director Ludwig Heck and his wife Margarete, née Nauwerk. From 1927 to 1969 he was director of the Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich. When the zoo was rebuilt in 1927, he set up the world's first geozoo in the Isar floodplain .

He and his brother Lutz Heck are best known for their attempts to breed breeds from what they originally considered farm animals to resemble their extinct ancestral forms. Today's Heck cattle (an attempt to breed cattle similar to the aurochs from cattle breeds originally considered by Heinz and Lutz Heck ) goes back to the attempts of Heinz Heck, the animals of his brother were lost. The Heck horse also goes back to these attempts and emerged from breeds such as the Konik or Icelandic horses . In 1934 he campaigned for the successful reintroduction of the Alpine ibex near Berchtesgaden .

In contrast to most of his colleagues and despite his brother Lutz's closeness to the system, Heinz Heck is also said to never have been a member of the NSDAP . Heinz Heck became completely blind in old age. He died on March 5, 1982.
