Life

Rasem Baban studied architecture at the University of Applied Sciences Trier from 1989 to 1994 . He first worked as an architect and project manager in the construction industry before 2000 audit and business advisory gesellschafft KPMG Germany changed where he was until 2002 Senior Executive Architect worked.

From 2002 to 2014 Baban worked first as technical manager and later as authorized signatory and deputy director in the Leipzig Zoological Garden. There he was, among other things, the project manager responsible for the construction of the Gondwanaland , which opened in 2011 and is the largest tropical hall in Europe.

In August 2014, Baban moved to the Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich as director and sole director. His projects are based on the announced concept of a “geozoo of biodiversity ”. In March 2016, a new master plan for the expansion and renovation of the zoo over the next 20 to 25 years was presented and approved by the Supervisory Board. The master plan brings the original concept of the geozoo back to the fore and combines this with an educational mandate to illustrate and explain global biodiversity. Furthermore, the protection of endangered animal species in future animal composition and animal husbandry is becoming a scientific focus.

Since Baban's entry into office and as part of the new master plan, the second construction phase of the polar world and thus the first geozone has been completely completed. A further step towards the implementation of the new educational mandate is the "Mühlendorf", the most important part of the geo-zone Europe. The first part with a novel in-situ species protection project to preserve native endangered fish species was opened in summer 2018, the second part of the project with Germany's largest zoo school is to be completed in summer 2019. In addition to the mill village and the completion of the elephant house reconstructed according to historical plans and the elephant outdoor area in autumn 2016, various other buildings and systems were renovated and repaired, such as the new Tao garden at the turtle house, the indoor and outdoor areas for primates , the new species protection center as a central place for knowledge transfer and the large aviary . Furthermore, in the course of the reorientation towards scientific species protection, less threatened animal species were replaced in favor of threatened species or exchanged with other zoological institutions due to better housing conditions.

Since the summer semester of 2018, Baban has been teaching at the Veterinary Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU). There he teaches in the elective “Zoo Management and Zoo Planning”.

Rasem Baban is married and has three children.
