Andreas Knieriem (born August 26, 1965 in Georgia , USA ) is a German veterinarian and zoo director. Since April 2014 he has been the Director and CEO of the Zoo , Tierpark and Aquarium Berlin. From 2009 to 2014 he was director and board member of Tierpark Hellabrunn AG in Munich .

Life

From 1988 to 1989 Knieriem worked as a scientific assistant at Duisburg Zoo . During his studies in veterinary medicine, which he u. a. graduated in Berlin, he worked as a veterinary guest in various zoos. Knieriem wrote his doctoral thesis on the subject of comparative histopathological studies on Atlantic white-sided dolphins - a contribution to the cause of death of dolphins in so-called bycatch . As part of a doctoral thesis on comparative dolphin pathology, Knieriem worked as a doctoral student at the Institute Pathology, Bethesda Hospital, in Duisburg.

From 1995 to 1996 Knieriem worked as a deputy veterinarian at Zoo Duisburg AG. From 1996 to October 2009 he was chief veterinarian and deputy zoological director at Hanover Zoo . As a curator for elephants , rhinos , primates , predators and aquatic mammals, he was also the EEP coordinator and international stud book guide for the drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus). At Zoo Hannover GmbH, Knieriem played a key role in converting it into an adventure zoo.

Since 2009 Knieriem has been working for the Munich Tierpark Hellabrunn AG: From November 2009 to January 2011 he was zoological director and chairman of the board. From July 2011 to March 2014 he was Director / CEO and sole member of the board in Hellabrunn. Under his management, Munich Zoo was able to improve in Anthony Sheridan's Europe-wide zoo ranking from 12th place (2011) to 4th place (2013). In an interdisciplinary collaboration with zoo architects and zoologists, Knieriem was in charge of creating the target and development plan for Hellabrunn within a year.

On September 19, 2013, the Supervisory Board of Zoologischer Garten Berlin AG announced that Andreas Knieriem had been named as the successor to the outgoing director Bernhard Blaszkiewitz . On April 1, 2014, he took up the position of Director and CEO of Zoo, Tierpark and Aquarium Berlin. By 2015 Knieriem had also drawn up a target and development plan for the "Berlin Zoological Gardens". This includes a modernization of all three facilities, through which the animal husbandry is to improve significantly and increase the attractiveness for visitors. This was especially vital for Tierpark Berlin-Friedrichsfelde GmbH. The first contents of the master plan could already be implemented in the following years. In 2017 Knieriem built one of the most modern facilities for giant pandas at Berlin Zoo, and Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony . The only giant pandas in Germany currently live in Berlin. Extensive modernization of the historic predator houses in the zoo and animal park has been ongoing since 2018. In January 2018 Knieriem was named "Berliner of the Year" by the Berliner Morgenpost because of his commitment to the Berlin Zoological Gardens .

Andreas Knieriem is married and has one daughter.
