Heinrich Bodinus

Heinrich Karl August Bodinus , also Karl August Heinrich Bodinus (born July 29, 1814 in Drewelow , † November 23, 1884 in Berlin ) was a German doctor and zoologist . He founded the Cologne zoo and was director of the zoological garden in Berlin.

Life

Heinrich Bodinus was born the son of the domain tenant Friedrich Bodinius in Drewelow near Anklam . After attending the Jageteufel College in Stettin , he studied medicine in Greifswald and Berlin from 1833 . During his studies he became a member of the Arminia Greifswald fraternity in 1833 .

After graduating, he first settled in Bergen on Rügen as a general practitioner . In 1852 he moved to Greifswald , where he began studying zoology . He was mainly engaged in poultry farming . Through several publications he was considered an authority in the field. He was very committed to the spread of the Stralsund high fliers . The breed type Bodinus bottlenose dolphins and the Bodinus amazon Amazona festiva bodini as a subspecies of the blue- bearded amazon were named after him.

In 1859 he followed a call from Caspar Garthe to Cologne , where he successfully built the zoological garden. In the fall of 1869 he went to Berlin to successfully reorganize the in bad shape zoo.

Heinrich Bodinus died in Berlin in 1884 at the age of 70 and was buried in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
