Gunther Nogge (born January 10, 1942 in Cologne ) is a German zoologist. From 1981 to 2007 he was director of the Cologne Zoo .

Life

After studying biology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , Nogge moved to Afghanistan. There he worked from 1969 to 1973 as a lecturer at the University of Kabul and as a scientific director at the Kabul Zoo . After a scientific activity in the field of parasitology from 1973 to 1981 at the University of Bonn and his habilitation in 1978, he took over the post of director of the Cologne Zoo from Ernst Josef Kullmann in 1981 . In 1982, together with Heinz Lüttgen, chairman of the supervisory board, he founded the Friends of Cologne Zoo eV

Under Professor Nogge's leadership, the zoo went through a number of serious changes. In 1985 the first of 150 European conservation breeding programs was launched. In 2002 he initiated the construction of the largest elephant enclosure north of the Alps.

On October 10, 1985, an incident in Cologne Zoo almost cost Nogge his life. The chimpanzees Petermann and Susi escaped from their enclosures and seriously injured Nogge.

In mid-2006, Nogge was declared unfit for work by a doctor. According to Nogge, the reason for his illness was a dispute with the zoo's supervisory board about the amount of his retirement benefits. In November 2006 a court ruled that Nogge was entitled to the amount of the pension he was claiming. In the course of these disputes, there was great unrest among the staff of the Cologne zoo.

In May 2006, the deputy head of the Duisburg Zoo , Achim Winkler, was elected to succeed Gunther Nogge. Winkler decided to take up the post of senior zoo director in Duisburg instead. On February 1, 2007, Theo Pagel , the bird curator at the Cologne Zoo at that time, succeeded Gunther Nogge.

Nogge's book Afghanistan from a zoological perspective became important for Norbert Scheuer's novel Die Sprache der Vögel (2015).

Honors

On March 26, 2007, Nogge received the Heini Hediger Prize of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums for his services, particularly in the field of species conservation programs . This prize had only been awarded six times since 1996.
