history
The university was founded in 1931 and first opened in 1932. In the 1950s and 1960s, the university was one of the most renowned institutions of its kind in Asia. She was considered to be the intellectual heart of the country and was the pride of Afghanistan.
In the 1960s, foreign scholars populated the campus teaching new subjects such as communism, feminism, and capitalism. Students of this era included Ahmad Shah Massoud , Gulbuddin Hekmatyār , Faiz Ahmad and Saydal Sokhandan. Many different political groups have been influenced by the university, such as Khaliqis, Parchamis, Sholayees, Ikhwanies.
In an argument between Ikhwanies and Sholayees, the Afghan poet Saydal Sokhandan was killed by Gulbuddin Hekmatyār . He shot him during a discussion. During the communist regime, the university lost lecturers and staff. The majority of faculties left the university during the unrest over the fall of the communist regime, the civil war, and the Taliban regime. Faculty made just $ 40 a month during the Taliban's rule - now, at $ 45 to $ 50 a month, slightly more.
It is estimated that the university will need $ 64 million to return to a basic level. In January 2004, the administration said they had only 24 computers and one stethoscope . As part of the resumption of the program, Kabul University has partnered with four overseas universities, including Purdue University .
In 2007, Iran donated US $ 800,000 to Kabul University's dentistry teaching. Iran also donated 25,000 books to the university.
