The Stralsund high flyer is more like a seagull than a pigeon , it is a shy animal that loves breeding.

The predecessor of the Stralsund high-flyer is said to have been brought from the Orient to Holland in the 17th century and then to Stralsund in the 18th century. Here the pigeon found many breeders; other breeding sites were Greifswald , Swinemünde , Stettin and Kolberg , with Stralsund remaining the “stronghold” of the breeders.

In the middle of the 19th century, different breed types developed, for example the Hevernick bottlenose dolphin and the Bodinus bottlenose dolphin . Heinrich Bodinus , the head of the Berlin Zoological Garden , was very committed in his position to the spread of the Stralsund high-flyer.

In 1905 breeders from Stralsund, Greifswald, Swinemünde, Bad Doberan , Soldin id Neumark , Stargard , Sehma and Scharfenstein joined forces. On January 1st, 1906, they founded the special association of breeders of the Stralsund high-flyer .

The special association split up in 1948 as a result of the political division of Germany . In West Germany it remained under the old name, in East Germany the special breeding association was founded. In 1990 the reunification of the association was decided and implemented.

Although both clubs had worked according to the same standards, the Stralsund high-flyer was rather filigree in the eastern part and more coarsely bred in the western part of Germany. The aim of the reunified club is the noble, medium-sized pigeon, as it was standard before 1948.

Today, the Stralsund high-flyer is mainly kept as an exhibition pigeon, whereby the high-flying style is neglected by many breeders.
