Remains of the Marienkapelle in Tannenberg

The Marienkapelle at the Grunwald Memorial was a place of prayer and memorial for Ulrich von Jungingen , the fallen Grand Master of the German Order.

history

Heinrich von Plauen had a Marienkapelle built next to the place of the order army camp, which was consecrated in 1413 to the patron saint of the order of St. Mary , but was destroyed again by Polish soldiers in 1414. After it was rebuilt, it developed into a pilgrimage chapel. Presumably the Lipka Tatars or the Crimean Tatars destroyed the building when they invaded East Prussia in 1656. After the end of the religious order there was no interest in the restoration. It was not until the district administrator of the Osterode district, Rudolf von Brandt , to whom the Tannenberg estate belonged, that the Jungingenstein was built on the Kapellenberg not far from the chapel in 1901 . In 1945, when a Polish memorial was being built, the foundations of the chapel were exposed. The facility is now a listed building .
