Renate Merklein

Renate Merklein (born September 1, 1939 in Hamburg ; † January 14, 1997 in Düsseldorf ) was a German journalist , publicist and editor .

Life

Merklein studied economics ( graduate economist ) and sociology at the University of Hamburg and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1969 she entered the economics and social sciences faculty of the University of Hamburg with a dissertation on social security in economic growth. From 1968 to 1990 she worked as a columnist for the news magazine Der Spiegel . In the summer of 1982 she criticized the financial policy of the Brandt and Schmidt governments as part of the Spiegel series "The Germans Will Be Poor", which was also published as a book. Her focus was on economic and social policy. In 1991 she became a member of the editorial board of Handelsblatt and Wirtschaftswoche .

She was married to the economist Armin Gutowski .
