Rudolf Thiel (born November 13, 1894 in Berlin , † September 7, 1967 in Spain ) was a German ophthalmologist , university professor and author of standard ophthalmological works .

Live and act

Rudolf Thiel studied medicine at the universities of Freiburg , Tübingen and Jena . From the winter semester 1913/14 he was a member of the student association AV Igel Tübingen . In 1920 he submitted his dissertation in Jena. From 1921 to 1925 he then held two assistant positions there: one at the pathological institute and another at the eye clinic there . Then she moved back to the University of Berlin , where he Emil Krückmann worked and in the same year habilitated ; In 1929 he became an associate professor there .

In 1935 he succeeded Otto Schnaudigel as professor of ophthalmology at the University of Frankfurt . Schnaudigel had previously been released from his duties by the Reich Minister for Science, Education and National Education , Bernhard Rust . Thiel was not a member of the NSDAP , but even under his leadership, employees of the University Eye Clinic were dismissed for racial reasons, because as early as 1933, the entire Frankfurt university medicine was nazified. Thiel, who chaired the Rhein-Mainischer Ophthalmologists Association from 1941, at least indirectly influenced the fact that only " Aryan " members were invited to the meetings of the association. Nevertheless, in 1945 he was appointed to the denazification committee of the medical faculty .

After Thiel succeeded for the first time in 1930 to photograph an eye section examined with a slit lamp , he concentrated on further research into glaucoma .

Thiel was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1944 . In 1957 he received the Graefe Medal of the German Ophthalmological Society for his lifetime achievement . In 1964 he was awarded the plaque of honor by the city of Frankfurt am Main . Thiel died on a trip to Spain.
