Albert von Metzler (born July 27, 1898 in Frankfurt am Main ; † March 12, 1989 ibid) was a German banker . From 1923 to 1977 he headed the Metzler bank .

Life

Albert von Metzler was born to Moritz (1869–1935) and Maria (1876–1974) von Metzler, geb. Humser. His grandfather, with the same first name, was Albert von Metzler . Albert von Metzler (the younger) was married to Elisabeth Kunze (1915–2012). The marriage resulted in two children, Barbara (1941–2003) and Friedrich (born 1943).

After attending the Goethe-Gymnasium in Frankfurt and completing military service in World War I, Albert von Metzler began his training in 1919 at the Metzler bank, which he did from October 1920 at the Münchmeyer & Co. in Hamburg, and from May 1922 at the Hardy & Co. in Berlin continued. In July 1923 he became a partner in the Metzler banking house. He was a personally liable partner until he left in 1977.

Albert von Metzler spent the years 1939–1950 in war and captivity. From 1940 he was on the staff of General Alexander von Falkenhausen in Brussels. There he met his future wife Elisabeth Kunze, who was the secretary of Generals Falkenhausen and Olbricht . In 1944 he was transferred to the Eastern Front and in 1945 was a Soviet prisoner of war. After his return in 1950, he rebuilt the Metzler bank together with his cousin Gustav von Metzler (1908–1984), whose business had declined sharply in previous years. By 1960 this phase of consolidation was largely over and the bank was able to expand its business activities again.

In 1956, Albert von Metzler was involved in the founding of the German Society for Securities Savings Ltd (DWS) as a representative of one of twelve banks .

Albert von Metzler was President of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange from 1961 to 1967 and Chairman of the Association of German Stock Exchanges. During his tenure, he advocated the unit listing of shares, which was introduced in 1967.

Honorary positions

Albert von Metzler was committed to social and cultural institutions in his hometown of Frankfurt am Main. From 1937 he was a member of the board of directors of the Free German Hochstift , from 1959 to 1968 first chairman. In the 1950s, he worked for the Senckenberg Foundation on the reconstruction and expansion of the Frankfurt community hospital , of which he was a member of the board from 1955 to 1960. As a board member of the Städelschen Museums-Verein, Albert von Metzler helped to rebuild the museum. From 1960 to 1975 he was a member of the administration of the Städel Art Institute .

Albert von Metzler Foundation

In 1998 Albert von Metzler's son Friedrich founded the non-profit Albert von Metzler Foundation in memory of his father. In 2005 it merged with the foundation of Albert von Metzler's daughter Barbara to form the Albert and Barbara von Metzler Foundation, or Metzler Foundation for short . The foundation primarily promotes children and young people and supports projects in education, training and health, among other things.
