History and construction

Construction work on the PIK-15 began in 1960. Two years later, construction began on the prototype, which first flew on August 29, 1964. The prototype was followed by six production aircraft. The aircraft had been designed by Kai Mellen, Ilkka Lounamaa and Jussi Rinta primarily as a glider tug and secondarily as a training aircraft. It is a wooden structure covered with fabric and designed as a cantilever low-wing aircraft with a closed cockpit and fixed tail wheel landing gear. In the cockpit, teachers and students sit next to each other. The aircraft is powered by a Lycoming O-320 -A2B with 112 kW.

In 2011 there were still six aircraft registered in the Finnish civil aviation register.
