The Continental A65 is a piston engine from the manufacturer Continental Motors Corporation , which has been used as an aircraft engine in light aircraft since the 1930s .
history
In 1931, Continental introduced the A40 with an output of 38 hp as the starting model for a series of small aircraft engines. The A40 was followed by the A50, A65, A75 and A80 versions, all of which were designed as four-cylinder boxer engines . The type number indicated the approximate performance in hp. By the outbreak of World War II , 8,000 copies had already been produced.
After the end of the war, the modified types C75, C85, C115, C125 and C140 were introduced, the last three models being six-cylinder engines. The C140 had a reduction gear as a special feature.
The A65 became the standard engine of the US Army Air Corps for use in all light liaison aircraft of the "Grashopper" type, e.g. B. the Taylorcraft L-2 , Aeronca L-3 and Piper L-4 . For this the A65 was given the military designation O-170 .
variants
- C75
- with double magneto ignition, the J series has an injection instead of the carburetor
- C85
- identical to the C75 series, but the speed at rated power of 2275 to 2600 min -1 and at cruise power of 2125 to 2400 min -1 raised
- C115
- uses the same cylinders as the C75, but the number of cylinders has been increased from four to six
- C125
- like C115, but the nominal power is increased by a higher speed
- C140
- Version of the C115 with reduction gear
