Continental O-470 is a series of air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engines that was specially developed for use in small aircraft by the American manufacturer Continental Motors . The engines were produced both as carburetor models (type designation O-) and as injection engines (type designation IO-).

The series also includes the models E165 , E185 , E225 , E260 and various special models. It was produced from 1950 to 1986.

construction and development

The first engine in the series was the E165 with a displacement of 7.7 liters and an output of 165 hp (121 kW). It was also the first engine in Continental's E series. Later models were given the designation E185 with 185 hp (136 kW) and E225 with 225 hp (165 kW). After the US military gave these three engines of the series the designation O-470, the company adopted the designation for all future models.

The O-470 series covers a wide range of outputs between 213 hp (157 kW) and 260 hp (191 kW). Development of the first engines began in the late 1940s. The first type certification under the US Civil Air Regulations was applied for on October 23, 1950 and issued January 19, 1951.

O-470-4: 225 hp (165 kW) at 2600 min -1 , dry weight of 415 lb (188 kg), previous designation 0-470-13B. Identical to the Model 0-470-13A, but with the Bendix-Stromberg Model PS-5CD carburetor instead of the PS-5C. Approved on January 19, 1951.

O-470-7: military version without type certification, the same design as E185-3, 205 hp (151 kW) at 2,600 min -1 , dry weight 352 lb (160 kg), Bendix Stromberg PS-5C or PS 5CD carburetor. Equipped with 18 mm spark plugs , the designation is 0-470-7A.

O-470-11: 213 hp (157 kW) at 2,600 min -1 , dry weight 391 lb (177 kg), pattern-approved on January 19, 1951st
