The Continental IO-360 is an aircraft engine from the US manufacturer Teledyne Continental Motors , which was developed for use in light aircraft . The air-cooled six - cylinder boxer engine was introduced in 1962 and is offered in several naturally aspirated engine versions (code IO ) as well as versions with turbocharging .

technical features

The Continental IO-360 was developed by Continental Motors Corporation in the late 1950s and approved for use in aviation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the USA on May 15, 1962 . Deliveries began that same year. The air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine was equipped with mechanical fuel injection from the start , which Continental Motors (today: Teledyne Continental) produces itself. The name was therefore IO-360 (identifier I : Injection) from the start.

The engine has been manufactured in numerous variants to this day. In order to improve the altitude performance, a turbo-charged version also provided with mechanical injection was offered from 1966 (identification TSIO ). The compression ratios are 7.5: 1 for the turbo version and 8.5: 1 for the suction version. The type approval of the turbo engine took place on September 11, 1966 by the FAA. All variants can be operated with both pull and push propellers. The engine is currently (as of 2006) still in production and is still economically successful.

This engine is not offered in a carburettor version, and one was never planned. A carburettor version would then have been designated as O-360 according to the designation system, a designation that is often used incorrectly. A four-cylinder variant called the Continental O-240 was presented in 1977. Well-known types that have been equipped with the IO-360 are the Cessna 172 , the Piper PA-34 Seneca , the Cirrus SR20 and the Maule M-4 .
