history

The historic ASK Riga (1931 to 1991)

From 1931 on there was a basketball team of the army sports club in Riga, which was one of the leading teams in the country and in the 1950s also one of the best teams in the Soviet Union and thus also one of the best club teams in Europe. In 1955 as well as 1957 and 1958 the championship of the Soviet Union was won and then three times in a row from 1958 to 1960 the first three events of the European Cup were won. One of the formative personalities of the team was their long-time coach Alexander Gomelski , who looked after the team from 1952 to 1964 and then worked for the Moscow army sports club CSKA Moscow for two decades . Without Gomelski, who left the club after the runner-up in 1964, ASK could no longer place itself among the three leading teams in the Soviet Union and was dissolved in 1991.

BK Brocēni (1991 to 2001)

BK Brocēni was founded in Riga in 1991 with no direct direct connection to the ASK. After the local competitor of ASK, the previous company sports team of VEF Riga, temporarily ceased its gaming operations in 1992, Brocēni was without competition in the first years of the Latvian basketball league and won the championships from 1992 to 1999, from 1995 on with the name affix ASK of the old Army sports team. In 2001 Brocēni also stopped its professional game operations after the championships in 2000 and 2001 went to BK Ventspils .

BK Skonto Riga (2001 to 2004)

After the end of BK Brocēni, the first-class basketball game in Riga was continued by a department of Skonto Riga founded in 2001 . The BK Skonto was runner-up three times in a row, but could not endanger BK Ventspils in the finals of the national championship, which continued to win the championships of those years.

BK Riga (2004 to 2006) / ASK Riga (2006 to 2009)

After the end of the BK Skonto Riga in 2004, the BK Riga continued the tradition of Riga basketball at the highest national level alongside the BK Barons Rīga, which was founded in 1991 . In 2006 the team renamed itself ASK Riga, referring to its origins in the army sports team. After the championship in 2007, the team lost touch with the national top and in 2009 only reached sixth place. At the beginning of the following season 2009/10 the game was stopped after the BK Barons and the BK VEF Rīga had returned to the Latvian Basketball League.
