Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) is the largest Chinese manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries .

Corporate development

The company was founded in 2011. At the end of 2017, 23 percent of almost 15,000 employees were employed in research and development . The head office is in Ningde, Fujian Province . There are also other branches in Shanghai , Jiangsu , Qinghai , Foshan and foreign branches in Munich , Paris , the USA and Japan .

In 2018, CATLs sold storage with around 25 GWh for electric , hybrid electric power and plug-in hybrid vehicles - and plans for 100 GWh by 2020. Competitors are Panasonic (as a partner of Tesla, Inc. ), Sanyo and BYD , LG Chem and Samsung SDI .

The company is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and included in the ChiNext share index .

Production sites

Erfurt, Germany

CATL plans to invest around 1.8 billion euros by 2025 to build a lithium-ion battery plant on a 70 hectare site at the Erfurt motorway junction . In the long term, this should create 2000 jobs. Construction of the plant began in October 2019 and production is scheduled to start at the end of 2020. In addition, the site of the former Solarworld factory in Arnstadt was acquired. This is where the logistics, warehouse and administration are to be located.

In the first stage of expansion, the factory should have an annual battery production capacity of 14  gigawatt hours . In the long term, an expansion to up to 100 GWh per year is conceivable.

Customers who are to be supplied from the factory in Erfurt include BMW , Daimler , Groupe PSA , Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover .

Liyang, China

The construction of a plant in Liyang in the province of Jiangsu was started in 2017th The annual production capacity is initially 10 GWh and can be increased to up to 36 GWh.

Ningde, China

The company's headquarters and another production site are located in Ningde , Fujian Province .

Xining, China

Another plant for the production of lithium-ion batteries is located in Xining , Qinghai Province .

Yibin, China

The construction of a new plant in Yibin in the province of Sichuan was started in January 2020th The planned production capacity is 15 GWh in 2022.
