Business areas
Small lithium ion batteries
These include lithium ion batteries for laptops, tablets, smartphones, power banks, cordless electric garden tools, hand tools, vacuum cleaners, electric bicycles, e-scooters and starters in cars and motorcycles. According to the Japanese market research company B3, Samsung SDI is the world market leader in lithium-ion batteries for e-bikes with a market share of 27% . Most e-bikes are sold in China (90% world market share). Cylindrical 18650 cells (18 mm diameter, 65 mm length) are usually used in the battery packs. Samsung SDI presented lithium-ion batteries with 21700 cells at Eurobike 2015 in Friedrichshafen.
Traction batteries for cars
After the dissolution of SB LiMotive , a joint venture with Bosch , Samsung SDI produces large-format lithium-ion accumulators for traction batteries in electric cars on its own . They are used, for example, in the BMW i3 (60 and 94 Ah) and Fiat 500e . Samsung SDI already has production facilities in South Korea and China (Xi'an). The former plasma screen factory in Hungary ( Göd ) should be able to build traction batteries for up to 50,000 electric cars per year from spring 2018.
Compared to its competitor LG Chem, Samsung SDI has relatively few customers in this segment. The market share of traction batteries for motor vehicles is correspondingly. Press speculation that Samsung SDI could become the main supplier alongside Panasonic for the Tesla Model 3 proved false. Elon Musk tweeted in June 2016 that this statement was untrue but that Samsung SDI's batteries could be used for Tesla's solar storage systems.
Energy storage systems (ESS)
Samsung SDI builds ESS for different requirements. Starting with uninterruptible power supply from servers to energy storage from renewable energy for power supply in households to large ESS in container size for regulating power fluctuations in the network.
Electronic components
Samsung SDI manufactures special materials that are necessary for the production of chips, LCD, OLED and solar cells.
SDI Germany
Samsung SDI Germany was founded in 1993 after the group had taken over WF-GmbH ( factory for television electronics of the former RFT company in Berlin-Oberschöneweide ). TV screens were produced. At the end of 2005, 710 of the 800 employees at the plant were laid off immediately after the subsidies ran out. The IG Metall union accused the company in Hungary ( Göd to have built) a new plant with the profits of the Berlin plant. Offers for talks by the Berlin Senate and the federal government were rejected. The remaining 90 employees work in service and research. The remaining employees partly switched to a transfer company.
