At the Loviisa nuclear power plant , near the town of Loviisa on the south-eastern coast of Finland , two VVER of Soviet design are in operation.

Block 1 and 2

The two VVER-440 with a net capacity of 488 MW each are in Loviisa and by the company Fortum Oy operated. In order to meet the Finnish safety regulations, a new version had to be specially developed, which is not used in Russia. These are the world's only completed reactors of the second VVER generation and the only ones of the VVER-440 type that have containment . This was supplied by the US company Westinghouse , the control technology comes from Siemens . Because of this unconventional east-west solution, the system was nicknamed "Eastinghouse".

Unit 1 became critical for the first time on January 21, 1977 , and Unit 2 followed on October 17, 1980. The reactors have been in commercial operation since 1977 and 1981, respectively. In 2007, the government issued an operating license for Unit 1 by 2027 Template: future / in 5 yearsand for Unit 2 by 2030 Template: future / in 5 years.

In 1993, an INES  2 incident occurred in Block 2 in the form of a double-ended break in a feedwater line , one of the main lines that feeds water to the steam generators .

Block 3

Loviisa was discussed as a construction site for the fifth Finnish reactor block, which is now being built on the site of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant .
