Loviisa repository

The Loviisa repository is located near the town of Loviisa on the southeast coast of Finland on the island of Hastholmen.

In repository Loviisa be low-level and medium-level radioactive waste (LAW or MAW) from the operation of nuclear power plant Loviisa stored. It was 1993-1997 in rapakivi - granite built and comprises a cavity depth of 120 m for solidified waste and mines for drying wastes from maintenance . The storage capacity is 113,000 m³. The possibility of a capacity expansion is planned to also accommodate decommissioning waste. The first part (for low-level radioactive maintenance waste) was completed in spring 1997. The first waste was stored in May 1997.
