Fingrid Oyj is a Finnish company based in Helsinki , which, as the national transmission system operator, maintains the high-voltage line network there .

The company, which is also a member of the Association of European Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E), was founded on November 29, 1996 and started operations on September 1, 1997. Under the Finnish Electricity Act, which stipulates that there is only one operator of the transmission network, Fingrid thus has the monopoly ( natural monopoly ) in Finland.

The two Finnish energy companies Fortum and Pohjolan Voima were formerly major owners until 2011, each with 25 percent of the shares . These had to sell their shares as a result of the EU's Third Energy Package and the associated unbundling requirements .

The company owns 33.3 percent of the shares in eSett Oy and 18.8 percent of the shares in the Scandinavian power exchange Nord Pool , which is based in Oslo . Wholly -owned subsidiaries are Finextra Oy (formerly Fingrid Verkko Oy ) and Fingrid Datahub Oy .

The Fingrid power grid (voltage levels 400, 220 and 110 kV ) has a line length of around 14,600 kilometers with around 120 substations . The company also operates all connections to neighboring countries such as Fenno-Skan and Fenno-Skan 2 together with the Swedish company Svenska kraftnät . There are other connections to Russia, Estonia and Norway.

In 2016, the total consumption of electricity in Finland was 85.1 TWh , of which 68.6 TWh were transmitted in the fingrid network.
