Fenno-Skan is an HVDC link between Dannebo near Forsmark in Sweden and Rauma in Finland , which was inaugurated in 1989. The 233-kilometer line consists of a 200-kilometer-long submarine cable manufactured by ABB , which was the longest high-voltage submarine cable in the world at the time the system was commissioned. On the Finnish side there is also a 33 km long overhead line section. The overhead line masts of the Fenno-Skan carry two conductor cables. The electrode line, which has a total length of 38 kilometers and is laid on a separate route on wooden poles for the last five kilometers, runs on the earth cable traverse.

The Fenno-Skan is a monopolar HVDC with return line via the earth with 400 kV operating voltage and 500 MW transmission capacity. A bipolar extension is planned.

A special feature of the Fenno-Skan is that, unlike other HVDC systems in Europe, the power grids are operated synchronously on both sides and are also linked to one another via three-phase power lines. However, since these lines run across Lapland, they are very long, so that higher transmission losses occur.

The cable belongs to the two transmission network operators, Fingrid from Finland, and the Swedish company Svenska Kraftnät .

An extension to Fenno-Skan 2 was completed at the end of 2011. The 800 MW, 500 kV submarine cable was laid by the SC Skagerrak cable layer and cost € 150 million.

While it is routed on the masts of the existing overhead line in Finland, a new overhead line was built for it from the coast to the Finnbole HVDC station in Sweden. This line crosses the Tierp-Gävle traction power line west of Mehedeby and the parallel 220 kV three-phase line Mehedeby-Gävle. This is the only intersection of an HVDC overhead line and a traction current line and the only point in the world where all three basic types of high-voltage lines (three-phase line, single-phase AC line and direct current line) meet.
