Barrel bottom in the town hall with hoselips

The Hoselips is a small wooden figure that adorns a wine barrel in the town hall of the municipality of Bahlingen am Kaiserstuhl and belongs to the Hoselips legend.

legend

In Bahlingen, wine used to be the main source of income for the residents. Hence it was customary to pay taxes with wine instead of money . This wine was stored in beautifully decorated barrels in the town hall cellar until it was ready for sale. The hoselips was on one of these barrels. Winemakers have always believed that the presence of the hoselip determines whether a good wine matures.

But one day a wine merchant came to Bahlingen who liked the Hoselips a lot and wanted to take it with him. So he made the mayor a good offer. The mayor thought nothing of it and gave the hoselips away without hesitation. But there was no good autumn in the years that followed. Everyone knew why, of course. Therefore, the community leaders brought the Hoselips back to Bahlingen, and since that day the wine has turned again.

Since then, the Hoselips has been closely guarded in the Bahlingen town hall.

poem

"The Hoselips sits in the town hall, he has to be
in the cellar,
because he alone fills
the Bahlinger community's bucket and barrel !"

Firmly

Since 1977 the Hoselipsfest has been held in Bahlingen in uneven years at the beginning of September. Like numerous wine festivals in the area, local associations in pretty courtyards invite you to enjoy culinary specialties.
