Helgonabacken (Hill of the Saints) is a hill in the Tuna district in Lund in southern Sweden . Most of the elevation today consists of Helgonagård (Park of the Saints) and is located in the city's university district.

history

The name is derived from Alhelgens Kloster (Kloster Allerheiligen) from the 11th century, which stood on Helgonabacken and in today's park and was one of the earliest church buildings in Denmark at that time . Remains of the monastery can still be seen in the north-western part of the park - the Lund rune stone was found in its ruins in 1682 . Bishop Johan Engeström had trees planted in the area that still exist today. By 1800 the hill was a popular destination for walkers.

At the instigation of Lunder Bishop Vilhelm Faxe , a park with fountains and ponds based on the English model was created from 1810 . The ponds were used, among other things, to raise carp . In the course of the rebuilding of the university library between 1902 and 1907, the fountain and the ponds disappeared except for one, in the northeast part of the park. The southern part was redesigned in the early 21st century.

Buildings and surroundings

Helgonabacken is characterized by the neo-Gothic building of the university library, which was built in the northern part of the hill. On the west and north sides of Helgonabacken there is the extensive area of the Lund University Hospital . To the northeast is the language and literature center (Språk- och literaturcentrum) of the university. To the south-east is Skissernas museum , whose sculpture garden extends into the park. To the south, the area is bounded by the Biskopsgata road to the rest of the university campus (Gamla kirurgen, Eden) . The Allhelgonakyrkan is about 100 meters west of Helgonabacken.

Today the southern part of Helgonabacken has a distinctive park character with meadows and benches, while the northern part, behind the library, is wilderness. A cycle path runs through the park from northeast to southwest.
