Mamoru Takuma ( Japanese 宅 間 守 , Takuma Mamoru ; born November 23, 1964 in Itami ; † September 14, 2004 ) was a Japanese mass murderer who killed eight first and second grade students in Osaka in 2001 and injured 15 others. The act became known as the Osaka School Massacre.

Life before the act

Takuma dropped out of high school and was rejected by his father. He was released from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces for having sex with a minor. There were rumors of an incestuous relationship between him and his mother, whom he lived with in 1984. In any case, his father was very angry and brought his wife back to him. In November 1984, Takuma was first arrested for rape .

He moved to Ikeda in Osaka Prefecture and found work as a bus and garbage truck driver. Colleagues described him as a completely inconspicuous, quiet, only somewhat solitary person who did not like to deal with customers and preferred to work alone. He was released in 1998 after attacking a passenger over the smell of her perfume.

He found his next job as a caretaker at Itami Primary School, a primary school six kilometers from Ikeda. In October of the same year, he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his ex-wife. On March 3, 1999, he poisoned the tea in the staff room with his medicine. As a result, four people had to be hospitalized, and Takuma was admitted to a psychiatric clinic. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia there , but released after a month on the grounds that he was able to take care of himself. This dismissal quickly turned out to be premature; in the following period he commuted between inside and outside.

He was arrested again in November 1999. There was suspicion of trespassing against him, but no charges were brought. In September 2000 he managed to find work as a taxi driver. He lost it on October 16 after breaking the nose of a bellboy in Osaka. He was also given notice of several apartments, among other things because he used to throw his rubbish off the balcony. He was admitted to the clinic again on May 23, 2001, but left the clinic after a day and never returned.

The fact

On June 8, 2001, Takuma deliberately overdosed ten times over the prescribed psychotropic drugs and killed eight students in Ikeda Elementary School with a kitchen knife and injured another 15 students. In fact, he should have come to a court hearing that day about the bellboy attack. His condition when he was arrested is described as extremely confused. At first he is said to have uttered repeatedly

"I went to elementary school."

then however

“I went to the train station and stabbed a hundred people with my knife. I didn't go to elementary school. "

Later, during an interrogation, he stated:

“Really everything has become unbearable. I tried again and again to kill myself but couldn't do it. I wanted to be arrested and sentenced to death. "

Trial and Execution

On August 28, 2003, Takuma was found guilty of multiple murders and sentenced to death . He showed no sign of remorse and refused to apologize to the relatives of his victims. He just asked that the sentence be carried out as soon as possible. This was done with a hurry, which is unusual for Japanese standards . Takuma was hanged on September 14, 2004 .
