The Parco Zoo Punta Verde is an animal park in the seaside resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . Opened in 1979, the zoo on the left bank of the Tagliamento is home to around 1000 individuals, around 100 different species. It is privately owned and funded largely from entrance fees.
history
The zoo is located on a piece of land directly on the Tagliamento river west of the municipality of Lignano Riviera. In 1972 the site presented itself as a fallow land , which was converted into a tree nursery by surveyor Sergio Rodeano . After the creation of a park and a pond that produced a permanent population of wild ducks, the first animal species were introduced on an experimental basis. The zoo was opened for the first time on June 16, 1979 and gradually expanded in the following years. Today it is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the vicinity of the seaside resorts of Lignano and Bibione .
The zoo has been recognized by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) since August 2002 .
species
The ponds on the zoo are fed by thermal water at 30 ° , so that not only local but also exotic aquatic plants can thrive. Among the animal species, the Siberian tiger is particularly popular with visitors. The couple Joshua (1994–2014) and Dob (1994–2015) lived together in captivity for almost 20 years. Punta Verde is now home to a new pair of tigers.
The zoo participates in several international species protection programs and works for research purposes with the Department of Animal Production Sciences at the University of Udine and the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa .
