history

Populated as early as Roman times, a Sarmatian garrison settled here in the first centuries AD. The Sarmatians were a nomadic people from the Eastern European steppes who, according to an agreement with the Roman Empire, were able to settle in the territory of the empire on the condition that they defend the border and supply the imperial army with fighters. The place name "Sarmazza" or "Sermazza", as the village has been named for centuries, comes from the Sarmatians.

After the devastation of the barbarians, the village was rebuilt in the Middle Ages and in "Vicus Novus", d. H. Renamed "New Village", from which the current place name "Vigonovo" arose. In the VII century, the parish church was built on the ruins of a former pagan temple and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. During the reign of the Habsburg monarchy, the municipality was separated from the Galta district by the ditch of what is now the main arm of the Brenta River. The diversion of the river was designed in the time of the Republic of Venice to reduce the frequent flooding (locally named Brentane ). On July 14, 1866, the Italian regiment "Light Cavalry Monferrato" marched under the leadership of Colonel Girolamo Avogadro in Vigonovo. As the first municipality in the province of Venice, the village was annexed by the Kingdom of Italy.

The landscape changed again in the XX. Century through the excavation of the Padua-Venice waterway. The hydraulic engineering planned in the 1960s was supposed to connect Padua with the Adriatic Sea, but is only partially completed. The stretch in Vigonovo includes a wide lock with a water basin and is now used for recreational activities such as fishing.
