Steele Bishop (born April 29, 1953 in Perth ) is a former Australian cyclist and world champion.
Steele Bishop was a professional cyclist from 1975 to 1985, having previously been an amateur for four years . His greatest success was in 1983 when he won the world title in the single pursuit at the World Track Championships in Zurich . During his cycling career, he won numerous Australian championship titles on the track . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he was a member of the Australian foursome in the team pursuit .
Bishop won six times in the West Australian road race Westral Wheelrace and the first two Griffin 1000 '' events . In 1984 he made a record attempt in a recumbent bike on the cycling track of Lang Lang in front of television cameras, but did not succeed.
In 1983 Steele Bishop was named “Western Australian Sports Star of the Year” and in 1985 was inducted into the “Western Australian Hall of Champions”. He also received the "Hubert Opperman Award" ("Oppy Oscar") in 1983, named after the legendary Australian cycling star Hubert Opperman , for the best performance of the year in Australian sport.
