Athletic career

Henning initially started for the company sports community (BSG) Lokomotive Erfurt . As early as 1952 he made the leap into the youth team of the GDR on train and road. In 1954, at the age of 19, he took part in the largest GDR stage race, the GDR Tour . In 1955 he was fourth in the GDR championships in road racing and was then delegated to the GDR focus of cycling, the SC DHfK Leipzig . At the GDR cyclo- cross championship in 1956 he won the title, and in the same year he was first in the one-day race Berlin-Angermünde-Berlin . At the 1956 road world championship he was 36 as the best GDR starter. In 1957, Henning was able to qualify for participation in the three-country stage race Internationale Friedensfahrt . As the youngest in the GDR team, he was second best GDR driver for several stages behind Gustav-Adolf Schur in the individual standings , but later fell back a little and at the end of the tour was fourth in the GDR sextet in 18th place. With the GDR team, he won the team championship. At the Harz Tour in 1957, he came first. Henning was also part of the GDR squad during the 1958 peace trip. In the third stage he achieved a podium position for the first time in second, but suffered a severe slump in the eighth section of the day and was finally only 58th of the tour, almost three hours behind. For this he held himself harmless at the GDR championships when he won the team time trial title with the SC DHfK. Henning achieved his last significant victory in 1959 in the one-day race Berlin-Leipzig.
