The Gandhi Sagar Dam ( Gandhi Sagar "Gandhi Reservoir") is one of four dams on the Indian River Chambal . The dam is in the Mandsaur district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

Building

The barrier structure was constructed as a gravity dam made of masonry. It is 62.17 m high and 514 m long. The storage space is 7322 million cubic meters in a catchment area of 22,584 km². The dam was completed in 1960. A 115 MW hydropower plant is operated at the foot of the wall , which has five 23 MW generators, each producing around 564 GWh of energy per year. After the power plant has been used, the water is used for the irrigation of 427,000 hectares of agricultural land through the Kota Dam, which is 104 km downstream of the Gandhi Dam, near the city of Kota in the state of Rajasthan .

There is also another turbine with 27 MW, so that the total output is 142 MW. The hydraulic drop is 44 m.

Construction of the Gandhi Sagar Dam began with the laying of the foundation stone by the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on March 7, 1954.

The reservoir of the Gandhi Sagar Dam is the second largest in India after the Hirakud Dam in terms of area (with a maximum length of 68 km and a maximum width of 26 km) . It attracts large numbers of domestic and migratory birds all year round. The BirdLife International (IBA) has classified the reservoir with the A4iii criterion because the number of water birds sometimes exceeds 20,000. It is estimated that the creation of the dam resulted in the displacement of 51,000 to 61,000 people from their former homes.

The Gandhi Sagar Dam stands in a ravine of the Chambal at a distance of 168 km from the district capital Mandsaur .

Together with the hydropower plant, it cost about 2.3 billion rupees.
