Kota also Kotah ( Hindi : कोटा , Koṭā ) is a city of millions in the east of the Indian state of Rajasthan . It is the capital of the district of the same name .

location

Kota lies on the east bank of the Chambal at an altitude of about 270 m above sea level. d. M. The distance to the northern capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur ; is about 250 km (driving distance); to Indore it is around 350 km to the south. The climate is warm and dry; Rain falls almost exclusively in the summer monsoon season.

The Hindi and Urdu- speaking population consists of about 80.5% Hindus , a good 15.5% Muslim and about 2% Jains ; numerically small minorities are Christians , Sikhs , Buddhists and others. As is common in censuses in northern India, the male population is around 10% higher than the female.

economy

Mainly cotton , millet , wheat , coriander and oilseeds are grown around the city . The city itself serves as a center for handicrafts, trade and services of all kinds. The most important traditional branches of industry are cotton and textile processing as well as the processing of natural stone; the chemical industry has also been important since the middle of the 20th century. In the vicinity there are several on nuclear and hydropower as well as thermal heat -based power stations.

history

The city belonged to the Chauhan Dynasty of Bundi in the Middle Ages . In the 17th century, the then ruling prince handed the city over to his son Madho Singh, who in 1631, with the consent of the Grand Mogul Jahangir, raised it to a separate domain that soon surpassed Bundi in power and splendor. The rulers of Kota bore the title of Maharaoh . In the phase of the decline of the Mughal Empire, the Marathas briefly took power, which was increasingly occupied by the British . With the independence of India (1947) the rule of Bhim Singh II, the last Maharaoh of Kota ended.

  • The most important testimony of history Kotas is built in the 17th and 18th centuries, the city's Palace ( City Palace ), which in its architecture takes many elements of the Mughal style. The ceilings and walls of the Raj Mahal are richly decorated with small mirrors and paintings with hunting scenes, erotic motifs and with themes from the legends about the Hindu god Krishna .
  • The Brijraj Bhawan , built in 1840 and rising high above the banks of the Chambal, was a British residence for a long time; it now serves as a hotel.
  • The Umed Bhawan Palace was built in 1904 and shows strong influences of the English colonial style.
  • In the middle of the Kishor Sagar Lake is the Jagmandir , a pleasure palace built in the 18th century with pavilions ( chhatris ) with Bengali roofs .
  • On the shores of the lake is the 7 Wonder's Park with miniature replicas of the Taj Mahal, the Pyramids of Giza, the Christ statue of Rio, the Eiffel Tower of Paris, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Statue of Liberty of New York and the Coliseum of Rome.

Surroundings

  • The cremation sites of the deceased princes are located in a walled district just outside the city; the square impresses with its silence and numerous memorial buildings ( chhatris ).
  • Approx. 10 km east of Kota is the Kansuan Temple , built in the 8th century in honor of the god Shiva ; he was in 16./17. Century changed slightly.
  • Approx. 35 km northwest of Kota is Bundi , the capital of a former Rajput principality with many sights.
  • The rarely visited temple complex of Baroli dates from the 9th to 12th centuries and is located approx. 50 km southwest of Kota.
  • Approx. 64 km north of Kota is the small town of Ramgarh with a beautiful Shiva temple from the 10th century.
  • To the southwest are the Baroli temples .
