Letter from Bundi-Post 1942 |
Bundi ( Hindi : बूंदी , Būndī ) was one of the princely states of the Rajputs in today's Rajasthan . The state is named after the capital of the same name .
The princely state was founded in 1342 by the Hada Chauhan Rajput Rao Deva, a descendant of Rao Visaladeva of Ajmer . Rao Surtan Singh (reg. 1531-1544) joined in 1533 the Mughal emperor Akbar I in which enlarged the state Bundi. His successor Surjan Singh (r. 1544–85) was named Rao Raja . Rao Budh Singh (r. 1696–1735) got into a dispute with Amber / Jaipur . His land was occupied several times from 1702 and finally divided between Amber and Kota . It was not until 1739 that his successor was able to regain the land with the help of Indore .
Bundi was a British protectorate from 1818 to 1947 . Ram Singh Bahadur (r. 1821-89) was raised by the British to Maharao Raja.
Bundi had an area of 5608 km² and 250,000 inhabitants in 1941. From 1894 to 1950 the state had its own postal system and issued its own postage stamps.
The princely state joined the Union of Rajasthan on March 25, 1948, joined India on April 7, 1949 , and was dissolved on November 1, 1956.
