Kota (also Kotah ; Hindi : कोटा , Koṭā ) was one of the princely states of the Rajputs in today's Rajasthan ( British India ), named after its capital of the same name .
Rao Madho Singh (1631–1656), who founded the princely state, was a younger son of Rao Raja Ratan Singh of Bundi . Kota was temporarily reunited with Bundi from 1707–1713. Rao Bhim Singh (1707-1720) was awarded the title "Maharao" by the Grand Mughal of Delhi . Kota became a British protectorate in 1817 . In 1941 it had an area of 14,827 km² and 790,000 inhabitants. A large part of the population belonged to the indigenous people of the Bhil .
Kota had its own state post between 1874 and 1901, for which very simply designed postage stamps were issued between 1883 and 1886.
On March 25, 1948, Rajasthan joined the Union , and on April 7, 1949, it joined India . The last Maharao Bhim Singh II. (1940-1956) was 1948-1956 deputy Rajpramukh of the state of Rajasthan. On November 1, 1956, the princely state was dissolved.
