Johann Augustin Wagner

Johann Augustin Wagner (born December 19, 1734 in Lohmen near Pirna , † June 14, 1807 in Merseburg ) was a German classical philologist and teacher .

Life

Johann Augustin Wagner attended the Kreuzschule in Dresden and studied from 1754 at the universities of Leipzig and Wittenberg . From 1760 he worked as a private tutor. In 1770 he became vice principal at the Stiftsgymnasium (cathedral school) in Merseburg , where he worked until his death.

In addition to his school service, Wagner dealt with the Greek and Latin literature of the Roman Empire . He published complete translations of the historiographers Cassius Dio (1783–1787) and Ammianus Marcellinus (1792–1794) as well as annotated editions of the sophist Alkiphron (1798), the epic poet Valerius Flaccus (1805) and Ammianus Marcellinus (1808, edited posthumously by his successor Karl Gottlob August Erfurdt ), as well as an edition of the Chronicon of Bishop Thietmar von Merseburg (1807).
