GDR tour 1951
The 1951 GDR Tour was the third stage race of its kind and was held from October 3rd to 14th. Originally it was supposed to take place in September with twelve stages, but had to be postponed and shortened by two stages for organizational reasons. The tour winner was Bernhard Wille from Eisleben .
Attendees
At the East German tour in 1951 took 78 racers in part, divided into 16 teams. The team structure had changed considerably compared to previous years, this time international teams from Czechoslovakia and Hungary competed , a GDR national team had been formed and the other GDR drivers drove for the newly formed sports associations (SV). The national teams each had six active players, while the sports associations each sent four drivers. For the first time the still unknown "Täve" Schur started this tour of the country, which he finished with an excellent 4th place. It wasn't until the following month that he won the " Rund um Berlin " competition, thereby drawing attention to himself.
The following teams made up the field of drivers:

Route
The total route was 1717 kilometers long and began and ended in Berlin . It was divided into ten stages and covered all five GDR countries. The starting stage from Berlin to Stralsund was also the longest part of the day at 237 kilometers, while the drivers on the third stage from Schwerin to Stendal had to cover the shortest distance at 133 kilometers. There were three mountain stages to be mastered between Leipzig and Zittau .
Race course
The tour was surprising, both in the individual and in the team classification , because the favorites did not live up to expectations. In the individual decision, the Hungarian Bela Bartusek and the GDR drivers with Lothar Meister I , Heinz Gleinig and Werner Weber were expected. Of them, only Gleinig (6th) and Weber (10th) made it into the top ten. The national teams had expected a duel between the GDR and Czechoslovakia, in the end Hungary I was clearly ahead of the GDR.
The surprise winner in the individual ranking was Bernhard Wille from the activist sports association, one minute ahead of the Hungarians Pal Kucsera. Wille benefited from the good teamwork of the activist drivers and initially won the second stage. It was only on the sixth stage that he won the yellow jersey of the front runner, which he was able to defend until the finish in Berlin. He started the sixth part of the day in 17th place with a gap of more than three minutes to the leading Hungarian Lajos Szabo, but was able to take it off with an eighth place five minutes and at the same time surpassed all drivers still ahead of him. On the remaining stages, the Czech Knezourek was Willes' toughest competitor, but he was able to keep the time difference of one minute until the end.
In the SV ranking, too, there was an unexpected winner with the Aktivist sports association; the favorites were the teams from the Einheit and Motor sports associations. With Wille and Dieter Köhler (5th), the activist team had two outstanding drivers in their ranks, and the team also shone with their tactically intelligent driving. In the end, the SV Aktivist was nine minutes ahead of the favorite SV Unit I, while the second favorite SV Motor I only came in fifth.
