The 28th GDR tour took place from June 16 to June 22, 1980 . With a prologue and seven stages, it led over 988 km. Overall winner was Falk Boden .
Attendees
90 drivers from five countries in a total of 15 teams took part in the tour. Eleven teams started with DDR I, DDR II, DDR III, ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt , SC DHfK Leipzig I, SC DHfK Leipzig II, SC Turbine Erfurt , SC Cottbus I, SC Cottbus II, SC Karl-Marx-Stadt and a mixed team the host country GDR . There was one team each from the ČSSR , Poland , Hungary and Bulgaria . Six drivers started per team. The ČSSR traveled with its actors intended for the Olympic 100 km race .

Jerseys
Five jerseys were awarded during this tour: the yellow jersey for the best overall, the blue jersey for the best team, the purple jersey for the most active driver, the green jersey for the best mountain driver and the white jersey for the best young GDR driver.
- Yellow jersey
At the end of each stage (except for the prologue) the winner received 15 seconds, the second 10 seconds and the third 5 seconds for the overall ranking. At the end of the tour, the three best placed riders in the purple and green jerseys were also credited with 15, 10 and 5 seconds respectively.
- Purple leotard
The first three drivers received 3, 2 and 1 points for each premium sprint. In the case of advances by individual drivers or a group of up to 12 drivers who had achieved a lead of 1:30 minutes at the destination over the next group of at least three drivers, each driver involved received five points (a single driver ten points).
- Green jersey
In category I mountain ratings, the first five drivers received 10, 7, 5, 3 and 1 points. In category II mountain ratings, the first three drivers received 5, 3 and 1 points.
- White jersey
The winner of this classification was the best-placed GDR driver in the individual classification, who was born after January 1, 1959.
- Blue jersey
The stage team ranking was the result of adding up the time of the three best placed drivers of a team in the stage ranking.
Stages
The tour covered 988 km with a prologue and seven stages. All stages led through the Thuringian mountains. As in the previous year, Bad Blankenburg was a permanent quarter. A total of 26 mountain classifications were driven, 19 of them in Category I and seven in Category II. There were three premium sprints on all stages, with the exception of the prologue and the individual time trial.
Prologue: Schwarzburg - Bad Blankenburg, 9 km
The tour started with a team time trial over 9 km. It led on a gently sloping route from Schwarzburg to Bad Blankenburg . The third driver of each team counted for the time in the team classification. GDR I prevailed just before the ČSSR.

1st stage: Rudolstadt - Rudolstadt, 197 km
The first stage was also the longest of the 28th GDR tour. It led from Rudolstadt over 197 km around the Drei Gleichen back to Rudolstadt. At the beginning of the race, a quartet of Hans-Joachim Hartnick , Udo Smektalla, Steffen Heilmann and Uwe Adler formed. They had a maximum lead of 2:25 minutes and were caught up again by the peloton after 106 km at the front. Olaf Ludwig , the third peace runner of the same year, launched an attack at kilometer 136 and drove a 14 km solo. Then Bernd Drogan and the Czechoslovak Milan Jurčo caught up and the trio gained a lead of 1:30 minutes. In the first mountain classification of the tour, the ascent to the Großer Hundskopf, Ludwig and Drogan attacked and took Jurčo 1:17 min from the four kilometers to the summit. In the finish sprint, Ludwig prevailed over Drogan. With this Olaf Ludwig took over the yellow jersey. Bernd Drogan secured the green jersey of the best mountain rider and Udo Smektalla the purple jersey of the most active rider.

2nd stage: Watzdorf - Cursdorf, 178 km
The second stage started in Watzdorf , led over 178 km around the Thuringian Forest and ended in Cursdorf . On the stage, which was peppered with three mountain classifications in the 1st category, a 14-strong group of leaders pulled away after a good 35 km and was swallowed up again after 70 km. At kilometer 117, Andreas Petermann attacked on the way to the Oberhof Grenzadler. Holger Kickeritz was able to follow. Thomas Barth and Olaf Jentzsch later opened up. The quartet had a lead of 4:15 minutes after 162 kilometers. In the last premium sprint, Petermann started again, broke away from the group and won the stage with 38 seconds ahead of Barth and over a minute ahead of Jentzsch. Kickeritz fell far behind with a rear wheel damage. After this stage, Andreas Petermann took over the yellow, purple and green jerseys.

3rd stage: Bad Blankenburg - Cursdorf, 174 km
The third stage led from Bad Blankenburg with eight mountain ratings over the Wegscheide , the Rennsteig , the Meuselbacher Kuppe and the Schmücke and ended at the Cursdorfer Höhe. In the first half of the race a top group of 24 pulled away. After 90 km they reunited with the main field. Subsequently, Andreas Petermann , the wearer of the yellow jersey, started several attempts to pull away. However, he couldn't break away. Finally, Falk Boden made the decisive step out of a group of four around Olaf Ludwig , Andras Takacs and Dolek. After driving 20 kilometers alone, he secured the stage win. He also took the lead in the overall and mountain classification. Udo Smektalla got back the violet jersey that had been lost the day before.

4th stage: Rudolstadt - Bad Blankenburg, 105 km
77 riders started the shortest stage of this tour. There was no mountain classification. Olaf Jentzsch, who was fourth overall, had to retire due to an injury. After 20 km, a 14-strong top group formed with Olaf Ludwig , Falk Boden and Andreas Petermann . The sixth, seventh and eighth overall, Andras Takacs, Bernd Drogan and Frank Herzog were not there. With strong edge winds, the group's lead grew to almost seven minutes. From this group, Olaf Ludwig prevailed against Michal Klasa and Hans-Joachim Meisch in the final sprint . The peloton was split up and the first pursuers crossed the finish line 4:24 minutes behind. Since Falk Boden finished in the top group, he defended his yellow jersey. Olaf Ludwig took over the violet jersey.

5th stage: Schwarzburg - Neuhaus am Rennsteig, 32 km
The 5th stage was an individual time trial over 32 km from Schwarzburg to Neuhaus am Rennsteig . The route had a constant gradient and the drivers had to overcome 500 meters in altitude. Olaf Ludwig won his third stage ahead of Falk Boden and Bernd Drogan . Thomas Barth , who was sixth in the overall standings, did not take part in the time trial due to an eye injury.

6th stage: Neuhaus am Rennsteig - Bad Blankenburg, 102 km
Three hours after the 5th stage, the 74 remaining riders started the second part of the day from Neuhaus am Rennsteig to Bad Blankenburg . The route ran over 102 km and included five mountain classifications. There were several breakaway attempts, all of which were unsuccessful. So there was the first mass arrival of this tour in Bad Blankenburg. The Czechoslovak Michal Klasa won ahead of Hans-Peter Wehe and Andreas Neuer . Jiří Škoda took the lead in the mountain classification.

7th stage: Bad Blankenburg - Rudolstadt, 189 km
64 drivers start the difficult final stage of the 28th GDR tour. It led over 189 km and nine mountain classifications ( Arnsgereuth , Neuhaus , Hinterrod , Masserberg , Kahlert , Oberhof , Gehlberg , Auerhahn and Großer Hund ) had to be completed. The stage was accompanied by rain and strong wind. Jiří Škoda , fourth overall and wearing the green jersey, got out during the stage , as did his compatriots Alipi Kostadinov and Michal Klasa .
Immediately after the start, a group of 20 formed. The five remaining drivers from the DDR I team ( Olaf Ludwig , Falk Boden , Hans-Joachim Hartnick , Andreas Petermann and Bernd Drogan ), Lutz Lötzsch , Frank Herzog and Udo Smektalla from the DDR II team, Martin Goetze , Bodo Straubel , Hans- Peter Wehe from SC Cottbus I, the ČSSR drivers Dolek, Milan Jurčo and Vlastibor Konečný , Joachim Meisch and Detlef Stoltze from SC Turbine Erfurt, Peter Scheibner from SC Karl-Marx-Stadt, the Hungarian Zoltan Halasz and Holger Kickeritz from the mixed team . At 100 km the lead over the rest of the field was already 15 minutes. After 128 km, Udo Smektalla broke away from the leading group and was more than two minutes ahead. Bernd Drogan continued, was able to catch Smektalla on the Big Dog in the last mountain classification and pulled past him. Drogan won the stage by over a minute over the chasing group. Olaf Ludwig prevailed from this group in the sprint. The field crossed the finish line over 28 minutes behind.

Yellow jersey (individual rating)
Of the 90 riders who started the tour, 60 reached the finish line on the last stage. With Olaf Ludwig (one stage), Andreas Petermann (one stage) and Falk Boden (four stages) there were three winners of the yellow jersey. Falk Boden took it over after the 3rd stage and defended it until the end. Boden won his first tour of the GDR. The second followed in 1984.

Blue jersey (team)
Of the 15 teams that started, 13 reached the goal of the last stage with at least three drivers and thus made it into the final ranking. The SC DHfK Leipzig II only reached the goal with two, Bulgaria with only one driver. DDR I immediately took the lead in the team standings in the prologue and expanded it step by step. In the end she was over 40 minutes ahead of the runner-up DDR II.
