route
The 954 kilometer long course began with an individual time trial in Rostock, led via Greifswald, Schwedt / Oder, Eisenhüttenstadt and Bitterfeld on mostly flat terrain to the finish line. At the end the route led through the Harz Mountains to Bernburg. The tour ran over six stages and was significantly shorter than in previous years. On the last stage there was a time credit of 60 or 30 seconds for the first place in the mountain classification at Wippra . The time bonuses were also given on each stage for the winner and the second.
Ratings
In addition to the overall individual ranking (the yellow jersey), an overall team ranking (the three best placed drivers of a team were evaluated) was held. The best young driver received the white jersey, the most active driver (award rating) received the purple jersey.
Race course
In the time trial at the beginning, the starters benefited from the rear starting positions, as the initially strong wind had subsided. Lothar Höhne from the ASK I team won by a narrow margin over Klaus Ampler . The second stage also went to Höhne after a mass sprint of 58 riders. The stage was marked by severe storms, which led to a mass crash of 30 drivers, as a result of which the co-favorites Rainer Marks and Rüdiger Tannenberger had to give up the race. The next stage was a typical wind-edge race , which quickly split the field. Günter Hoffmann won the sprint of the leading group ahead of Ampler, who, thanks to the time credit, secured the yellow jersey. The goal in Eisenhüttenstadt was reached by a small group with a slight lead, out of which Dieter Mickein showed the best steering skills on the cinder track of the sports stadium. The next stage was the longest distance of the tour with 206 kilometers and resulted in numerous cancellations. The later overall winner Grabe fell, fought his way back to the top and immediately initiated a new top group from which Lothar Borschel won the finish sprint (again on a cinder track). The last stage was marked by a long breakaway attempt by the Belgian Declerq and the Dane Bjerg. They were only caught a few kilometers from the finish. Grabe secured his overall victory with second place behind Eberhard Butzke .
