The 12th GDR tour took place from August 17th to 25th, 1961 . It was 1,384 kilometers long and led over eight stages. Overall winner was Gustav-Adolf Schur , who won the tour for the fourth time after 1953 , 1954 and 1959 . The team competition was won by the SC Science DHfK Leipzig I .

Attendees

84 drivers from 14 teams took part in the tour. With England , the Netherlands and Poland , three international teams were involved. With the exception of England (four starters), the other teams consisted of six drivers each. The GDR teams were divided into five sports clubs and two sports associations . Four sports clubs competed with two teams.

The GDR tour led over eight stages and had a total length of 1,384 kilometers. 42 kilometers of the second stage were held as an individual time trial, 164 kilometers of the sixth stage were a mountain time trial that led up to the Kyffhäuser . The tour route, starting in East Berlin and ending in Potsdam , ran through the southern half of the GDR . Three mountain stages had to be completed between Zittau and Nordhausen .

Jerseys

Two jerseys were awarded during this tour: the yellow jersey for the best overall and the blue jersey for the best team .
