Route
While the previous GDR tours covered the entire GDR area, the 1962 route had been moved to the south of the country. For the first time, mainly smaller stage locations were selected. The tour began in Magdeburg and ended in Schönebeck , at the gates of Magdeburg. The drivers had to cover a total of 1280 kilometers on nine stages, one of which was an individual time trial . The predominantly mountainous terrain was used for seven mountain ratings. At 220 kilometers, the third section of the day from Bad Langensalza to Plauen was the longest.
Race course
Already on the first stage, GDR master Ampler showed that he was willing to put his stamp on the tour. Together with the Leipzig ASK driver Helmut Zirngibl , he had hurried out of the field by over a minute and won the yellow jersey with a lead of half a minute . After his second stage win on the third and longest part of the day, which he had fought for after a 42-kilometer solo journey, Ampler was already in the lead with just under five minutes in the overall individual standings. Certainly he wore the yellow jersey for the overall victory as far as Schönebeck, which he took with a margin of 8:35 minutes. Last year's winner Schur had to be content with fourth place this time with a deficit of 12:18 minutes. Karl-Marx-Städter Lugert was able to prevail as the best young driver, Rainer Marks from the second team of the SC DHfK Leipzig won the mountain classification .
