GDR tour 1965
The GDR Tour 1965 took place from August 18th to 25th as a stage race for the 15th time in the German Democratic Republic . The individual competition was won by Axel Peschel , in the team standings , the outdated SC DHfK Leipzig overall victory.
Attendees
There were 80 racing cyclists who were grouped into 16 teams. These included five foreign teams. Among the active were the GDR champion Siegfried Huster, determined three days ago, and the last GDR tour winner, Klaus Ampler . The following teams competed:

The tour was held in eight stages. A total of four jerseys were awarded: yellow for the overall individual classification, white for the best young driver, purple for the most active driver and blue for the team classification. In the individual ranking, first place was credited with a time of one minute, while the second was credited with 30 seconds. After the team classification was determined according to a point system on the last tour, the team returned to the time classification in 1965.
Route
The eight-stage route had a total length of 1000 kilometers. For the first time there was a criterion and two time trial stages . The tour started in East Berlin , then headed north and then south in Schwarzenberg / Erzgeb in the Ore Mountains. to end. Seven of the 16 GDR districts were passed through. In the last third of the journey, three mountain stages had to be mastered.
Race course
The individual ranking of the 15th GDR tour was decided on the two time trial stages. After Axel Peschel from Berlin had already worn the front runner's yellow jersey on stages three and four, but then lost it to Dieter Vogelsang from Karl Marx , Peschel won the first time trial in the fifth stage with a one-and-a-half minute lead. This brought him back the lead in the overall standings, which he did not give up on the following sections of the day. He also won the final time trial in the Ore Mountains and was able to extend his lead in the overall standings even further. It finally won the tour with a distance of 3:53 minutes to the runner-up Bernhard Eckstein .
The time trial also played a decisive role in the team classification. Up to the fifth stage, the first team of SC Dynamo Berlin was in the front, but in the time trial on the fifth leg of the day, SC DHfK Leipzig was able to place four drivers from its first team behind the victorious Peschel. The Berlin team fell more than four minutes behind the DHfK, which did not give up the top of the team classification and in the end secured the overall victory with a lead of 3:36 minutes over SC Dynamo.
