Jürgen Exner

Jürgen Exner is a former German racing cyclist who was active in road cycling in the GDR in the 1960s .

Athletic career

Exner became known nationwide in 1965 when he took part in the GDR tour for the 2nd team of ASK Vorwärts Leipzig . In the “Best Young Driver” category, he took third place in the final ranking. The 1966 cycling season was the most successful year of Exner's sporting career. In June he surprisingly won the circuit race “Around the Scharmützelsee” ahead of the third of the 1966 International Peace Ride Axel Peschel . His third place at the “Grand Prix of German Sport Echo ” in August in Sebnitz earned him the nomination for the road cycling world championship . There he finished ninth as the best GDR driver. In 1967 Exner made an excursion into cyclo-cross sports . At the cyclo-cross championship of the Leipzig district he was runner-up, at a cyclo-cross race in Torgau he came third. After he had not appeared in the results lists of the national races in 1968, Exner reported again in the 1969 racing season. He won the “Rund um die Wartburg” round race, finished seventh at the “ Great Saxony Prize ” in Karl-Marx-Stadt and came sixth at the GDR championships .
