Men singles

The race for the men's individual road championship took place on Sunday, July 24th, at the Sachsenring near Hohenstein-Ernstthal . 20 laps had to be completed on the 8.2 km long circuit, making the total distance 174 km. In addition to the steep climbs on Badberg and Queckenberg, the 80 riders who started had to fight with scorching heat. 59 of them had to pay tribute to the exertion and got off their bikes prematurely. The race already reached its first climax on the second lap, when four relatively unknown riders were able to pull away from the field. At times they had a lead of three minutes and were able to fend off all attacks from the main field for a long time. The group only fell apart in the 15th lap, only the Leipzig ASK driver Ulrich Richter and Dieter Mickein , who was open from the main field , continued the solo journey. A lap later, a sextet formed, in which the defending champion Siegfried Huster also rode. He and Jürgen Exner from ASK Vorwärts Leipzig managed to break away from the group 15 km before the end of the race, and both were aiming safely towards the goal. In the final sprint, Huster left his competitor well behind and defended his championship title with an advantage of eight seconds.

Team Championship - Men

On Friday, June 17, 1966, the GDR championship in the 100 km team time trial was held. While a route had been selected at Lübben in the last five years , the 1966 team championship took place on a circuit on the motorway between Engelsdorf and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz near Leipzig . The aim was to give the national team drivers the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a route that was similar to the 1966 World Cup course in Cologne-Müngersdorf . During the race, however, it turned out that the Leipzig route was two kilometers too short. The start and finish was in Leipzig's Max-Liebermann-Straße in the north of the city, with 18 teams of four at the start in scorching heat and mild wind. The defending champion ASK Vorwärts Leipzig and the former series champion SC Dynamo Berlin were considered favorites . Halfway through the distance, the four-man Dynamo had set a speed of 47.2 km / h, which was not reached by any other team. This pace could not be maintained in the second part of the race because Kurt Müller suffered a weakness and Eberhard Butzke fell shortly before the finish. Nevertheless, the remaining trio Lothar Appler , Axel Peschel and Kurt Müller achieved a time of 2:08 hours and 45.9 km / h, a time that was clearly surpassed by the other teams. Even the defending champion Vorwärts Leipzig was around 2:12 minutes slower. Although numerous small sports communities took part in the championship, only one team was not included in the ranking.
