Men's individual championship

Oberlausitzer Grenzlandring

The men's individual championship was held on August 5, 1962 in front of 30,000 spectators in muggy weather on the Grenzlandring in Upper Lusatia . Ten laps had to be completed on the 18-kilometer circuit with start and finish in Neugersdorf , so that the 153 drivers who had started had to complete 180 kilometers. For nine laps the race went without any highlights before a preliminary decision was made on the last lap on the ascent to the Eiskellerberg. Defending champion Gustav-Adolf Schur , Klaus Ampler and Manfred Weißleder were able to break away from a top group of eleven and gain a lead. In the subsequent tactical skirmish between the two Leipzig DHfK drivers Ampler and Schur as well as the Karl-Marx-Städter Wismut driver Manfred Weißleder, Ampler emerged as the winner, who started a solo journey with the help of his teammate Schur. White leather, left on its own, initially lacked the strength to keep up with Ampler, who was heading for a sure victory. In the sprint for second place, Weißleder was able to mobilize his reserves again and made it to the finish with two seconds ahead of Schur. Eight other drivers crossed the finish line 43 seconds after Schur.

100 km team driving

On July 30, 1962, the road team driving champion was determined in Lübben . The event had an international character, as teams from Denmark and Poland also took part. The championship was a triumph for SC Dynamo Berlin , which with its three teams took the top three national positions. Only the Danish team was able to penetrate the phalanx of the people's police with second place. The new title holder SC Dynamo Berlin I drove a world record with 2: 11: 25.5 hours, and the third team also undercut the previous best performance. Dynamo I was in front in all intermediate times and already had a lead of 1:04 minutes after half the distance. With the competition, including the runner-up Denmark, many drivers could not keep up with the pace, so that their teams only had to continue the race with three participants.

Women's individual championship

On the same day as the men, the women completed their individual road championship, also on the Grenzlandring. However, they only drove four laps, which corresponds to a total distance of 72 kilometers. There was the same run-in as last year, so that Elisabeth Kleinhans was able to successfully defend her title.
