1st run, June 24, 1956
The first run of the individual road championship was held as a 100 km time trial. The route ran from Stendal to Wolmirstedt and back. In rainy weather 53 drivers took to the start, among them was the defending champion Horst Tüller from SC Einheit Berlin . In addition to the adverse weather conditions, the active participants were also handicapped by the poor road conditions. The road surface consisted of fine grit, which caused numerous tire damage when it was damp. Horst Tüller, who had to change tires twice, was the one who suffered. Since he was using outside help, he was disqualified after he was still in the front at the turn. Only 29 drivers got through the race. The fastest time was set by ex-Magdeburg Gustav-Adolf Schur , who was only 25 kilometers from the Wolmirstedt turning point. The driver, who is now starting for SC DHfK Leipzig , won with a lead of just under five minutes over his teammate Rolf Töpfer , who had worked his way up from fifth place after the turning point.

2nd run, July 29, 1956
In the second and decisive race of the individual road championship, 65 drivers had to cover 230 kilometers in the 51st “ Around Berlin ”. This time the weather was dry but hot, and the track left a lot to be desired because of the numerous potholes. Two closed rail gates and material defects on the racing bikes had a significant impact on the course of the race. One of the sufferers this time was the winner of the first run, Gustav-Adolf Schur, who damaged his rear wheel after 57 kilometers due to a fall and was handicapped as a result of the race. It took him five minutes to get his bike going again, but he couldn't get to the front of the field. This had formed at kilometer 98 with the drivers Rudi Kirchhoff , Benno Funda and the unknown Hans-Joachim Bohr from SC Einheit Berlin . Various groups tried in vain to catch up with the trio, which later shrank to a duo when Funda could no longer keep up the pace. A closing railway barrier later slowed Bohr out so that Kirchhoff could drive towards the goal on his own. He won the race just under a minute ahead of the unlucky Bohr. As in the first run, Erich Hagen crossed the finish line in fourth place and thus achieved the number of points 34, which none of his competitors could beat. With this, Hagen won the individual road championship in 1956.
