At the road cycling championships in the GDR in 1954, the BSG Berlin Bear won the individual races of the Magdeburg-based Gustav-Adolf Schur and the team time trial .

Single race

The decision about the GDR single road champion was made over two runs. For the placement points from twenty to ten were awarded, from the addition of which the master was determined.

1st run: "Around the Ore Mountains" (June 20, 1954)

The 170-kilometer route led from Karl-Marx-Stadt via Annaberg-Buchholz to Johanngeorgenstadt , the highest point of the journey, and back via Aue to Karl-Marx-Stadt. After 20 kilometers, on the slope to Rasmussenberg before Marienberg , there were already the first failures in the field of drivers. At kilometer 45 behind Wiesenbad , the 40-strong main field was blown up when Gustav-Adolf Schur , Werner Malitz and Detlef Zabel pulled away . After just ten kilometers, the trio had a one-minute lead over a field of pursuers that consisted of twelve other drivers. After a total of 70 kilometers had been covered, four drivers, including the Karl Marx townsperson Horst Siegel , broke away from the pursuers and after a quarter of an hour came within 200 meters of the three front runners. On the twelve percent incline to Johanngeorgenstadt, Schur and Zabel were able to shake off their pursuers again and increased the lead to two minutes. Malitz could no longer keep up with the pace and gave up. Both front-runners set out on their return journey to Karl-Marx-Stadt at 45 km / h. In Aue, 35 kilometers from the finish, Schur left his rivals behind and was aiming for victory alone. He won the race with a lead of almost five minutes over Zabel.

2nd run: Leipzig – Oschatz time trial (4th July 1954)

The time trial stretched 104 kilometers from Leipzig to Oschatz and back again. After Schur had confidently won the first championship run, he had to fight off stubborn competition in the time trial. At first the two unknown Berliners Mebes and Siegfried Grigat (both BSG Motor Friedrichshain West) surprisingly stood up to him. Mebes had set the best time after 25 kilometers, after 80 kilometers Grigat was 24 seconds ahead of Schur. In the last ten kilometers, however, Schur and Benno Funda played to their strengths. Both took away two minutes from Grigat, but the best time was set by Gustav-Adolf Schur, who with 19 seconds ahead of Funda also won the second championship run and thus the championship title. Fundas second place was enough for him to place second in the overall standings, while his teammate Detlef Zabel achieved third place in the championship after his fifth place in the time trial.

Team Time Trial (July 18, 1954)

The team championship was held as a time trial on a 98-kilometer route from East Berlin to Freienwalde and back. It was driven with teams of six who were sent out on the track every five minutes. In cold, wet weather, the BSG Berlin Bear team with Benno Funda , Werner Gallinge , Fritz Jahresling , Werner Malitz , Rudi Kirchhoff and Heinz Sippli had already set the best time at the turning point with a 2:45 minute lead over the BSG Rotation Berlin for Detlef Zabel . Ratation had lost the race at the beginning, but was able to maintain second place until the end, but with 2:32 minutes behind the BSG Berliner Bär. Their victory is all the more highly valued because Gallinge was canceled on the way back and Malitz had to cope with a broken saddle. The defending champion BSG Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt with the fourth place in the championship Horst Siegel had to be content with fourth place this time because the BSG rotation Leipzig Ost was 1:30 minutes faster. The small Berlin company sports association (BSG) Motor Friedrichshain West came in surprisingly well in fifth place.
