Individual championships

Men

The championship was held on July 31st on the Schleizer Dreieck , usually a motorsport racetrack. The circuit, peppered with numerous climbs, had a length of 7.631 kilometers and had to be driven through 22 times. The 168 kilometers were completed in scorching heat, so that after the eleventh lap half of the field of over 70 drivers had given up. Then a 14-strong top group formed, in which Klaus Ampler from SC DHfK Leipzig and Claus Hilbert ( SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt ) set the pace. On lap 14 Ampler attempted to break away alone, which gave him a lead of 40 seconds. Just one lap later, four more drivers followed, led by Gustav-Adolf Schur . With three laps to go, three drivers fell behind, and Schur and his team-mate Bernhard Eckstein were aiming for the goal alone. On the home stretch Schur Eckstein didn't give a chance and won his fifth individual title, the fourth in a row. The pursuers did not cross the finish line until 2:14 minutes later, led by Klaus Ampler, one of the most active during the entire race.

100 km team time trial

The new title holder in the team time trial was determined on September 18 on a route between Cottbus and Hoyerswerda . There were fewer teams this time than in previous years, as several top drivers were on their way to competitions abroad or were on vacation. After half the distance it became clear that this time the SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt could not be beaten. At the turning point, the four Bismut drivers Manfred Weißleder , Johannes Schober , Peter Härtel and Dieter Wiedemann already had a lead of almost two minutes over the defending champion SC Rotation Leipzig , which the quartet was continuously expanding. At the finish the Karl-Marx-Städter had dethroned the previous year's champions with a lead of 2:42 minutes. The fact that the second team of SC Wismut came in third made it clear what a large reservoir of top drivers the club had.
