Men singles
On Sunday, August 23rd, around 100 drivers took on the fight for the individual road championship on a 16.5-kilometer circuit in Schleusingen , Thuringia , which they had to tackle ten times. A varied race developed over the 165 kilometers, which was characterized by numerous attempts to break away. In the second lap, a group of four drove away from the field, led by Dieter Mickein from Leipzig . However, due to Mickein's fall, the group fell back into the main field and later gave up. Then Karl-Heinz Kazmierzak and Rüdiger Tanneberger separated and were able to work out a lead of 40 seconds. They were recaptured in the fifth round. In the seventh lap, a trio led by Siegfried Huster had a 50-second lead, but these three were overtaken by the 40-man main field one lap later. On the last lap, Huster took the lead again, but Fritz Braun and Tanneberger sprinted over him on the last kilometer, the latter crossing the finish line first, surprisingly winning the championship.

Women
The women's road championship was held on Sunday, August 2, as part of the Grand Diamond Prize on the 75-kilometer Karl-Marx-Stadt - Frohburg - Karl-Marx-Stadt route . This led through mountainous terrain and there was a strong wind. The first half of the race went without any significant highlights, only the unknown Hertha Blasche from Dresden caused a sensation with her breakaway attempt, with which she had temporarily gained a lead of two minutes. After the turning point in Frohburg, a group of 25 formed, which the woman from Dresden quickly caught up with. On the way to Karl-Marx-Stadt, the group decimated due to a fall and because several riders could not keep up with the pace. With two kilometers to go, only six women were ahead. From this group, Elisabeth Eichholz and Renate Krämer managed to break away and drive towards the goal alone. Eichholz successfully prevailed in the sprint.
