Great Diamond Prize

The Grand Diamond Prize was a one-day road cycling race that peaked in the 1950s and 1960s. It was only advertised for domestic drivers. The bike race was later held as a criterion .

history

The history of cycling goes back to 1929. On August 29th of that year, the “Chemnitz Diamond Prize” was held for the first time under the direction of the Chemnitz local branch of the German Cyclists Union . The prizes for the winners in the A and B classes were donated by Diamant-Werk , a bicycle manufacturer based in Chemnitz. The Diamant-Werke sponsored the Diamond Prize until 1996. The second Diamond Prize did not take place until seven years later in 1936, but was then held regularly as a street race in Chemnitz until 1939.

From 1950 the race, now known as the “Grand Diamond Prize”, was organized by the company sports association of the Diamant-Werke, BSG Motor Diamant Chemnitz. The road race developed into an important part of the GDR cycling calendar, in which all top riders from the GDR took part. The world champions Gustav-Adolf Schur and Bernhard Eckstein can also be found in the list of winners of the Diamond Prize, as well as the GDR champions Siegfried Huster , Dieter Mickein , Manfred Radochla and Axel Peschel . In 1966 the Grand Diamond Prize was also rated as the GDR championship.

After 1970 the diamond award was discontinued for 15 years. A revival did not take place until 1986 and was carried out as a criterion from then on . In this form, the Diamond Prize initially lasted until 1990. After the political change in 1989 , the Diamond Prize was again canceled for two years before the newly founded RSC Diamant Chemnitz from 1993 to 1996 again four criteria under the traditional name of Großer Targeted Diamond Prize. Well-known names like Lutz Lehmann and Dirk Müller were among the winners .

After the Diamant-Werke withdrew as a sponsor in 1997 and the RSC Diamant also fell apart, no initiators were found for the continuation of the Diamond Prize. In 2012 the cycling club Sachsenblitz Burgstädt took up the idea of the Diamond Prize again and organized another criterion under this name in Hartmannsdorf near Chemnitz.
