Men singles
Racetrack
The individual championships for men and women were held on a 10.9 kilometer circuit in Mittweida . With the Eichberg and the Weißthaler Berg, it had two significant gradients and, with its steep serpentine descents and narrow streets, ensured the highest levels of difficulty. While the men had to complete 15 laps, the women had to complete the route six times.
Race course
On Sunday, June 9, 1963, 20,000 spectators lined the championship circuit in Mittweida, Saxony, in the searing sunshine. 86 drivers, including the defending champion Klaus Ampler from Leipzig , tackled the 163.5-kilometer route, but numerous defects quickly decimated the field of drivers . Right from the start there was a fight for good starting positions, Ampler in particular repeatedly caused unrest in the field, but was not alone with his constant advances. While his club mates Gustav-Adolf Schur and Günter Lux assisted him, the SC Dynamo Berlin drivers led by Manfred Brüning made the race particularly fast. The decision matured in the tenth of the 15 rounds. Until then, a top group of three with Brüning, Maleska (both SC Dynamo Berlin) and Karl-Heinz Kazmierzak from ASK Vorwärts Leipzig had led the race. Now Ampler joined them, but quickly left the trio behind and started an irresistible solo trip, which finally led him to the second championship title with a lead of 1:20 minutes. The difficult course, the hot weather and the many defects ensured that only 22 athletes survived the race.
