GDR road cycling championships 1959
The GDR road cycling championships in 1959 were held in the individual road disciplines for men and women and the men's 100 km team time trial. The Leipzig Gustav-Adolf Schur won for the fourth time the title in the men's singles, with the women defended Karin Hansel from Freiberg also its title, and in the team time trial was won by the foursome of SC Rotation Leipzig .
Men
Single race
The decision was made on Sunday, July 26th, on a 15.5-kilometer circuit near Venusberg , 20 kilometers southeast of Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) , in the Ore Mountains . The demanding route with long inclines and a serpentine steep descent had to be lapped ten times, so that the participants had to cope with 155 kilometers. The start and finish were at the spinning mill outside the village. After two thirds of the race it looked as if the new champion would be chosen from a group of three at the top. Both Leipzig Bernhard Eckstein and Günter Lörke and the Jena Joachim Scheitler had gone with a lead of 3:30 minutes in the penultimate round, but then the defending champions made Gustav-Adolf Schur in a six-kilometer climb alone to catching up on. With five kilometers to go, Schur had reached the top three and finally found the strength to win the race with a sprint. He won the GDR championship for the fourth time. His teammates Eckstein and Lörke completed the total triumph of the SC DHfK Leipzig with places two and three .

100 km team time trial
For the first time, the championship in the team time trial was held with teams of four. The race was held on Sunday, September 6th, as in the previous year in Lübben , Brandenburg . In a strong headwind, the team of SC Rotation Leipzig with Egon Adler , Lothar Höhne , Appelt and Burek surprisingly won ahead of their favorite local rivals SC DHfK Leipzig . At the end of the day, the rotation foursome had a lead of 1:42 minutes.
